As a young mage, he underwent rigorous training under the tutelage of his father, honing his skills in the elemental school of fire magic. Vastrien's family was devastated by the Scourge invasion, and he witnessed the destruction of the Sunwell firsthand. This event deeply affected him, fueling his desire to reclaim the lost source of their magic. In response to such a tragedy, he forwent his birthname and adopted the surname 'Anu'thori', meaning 'The Furious' in Thalassian.
