Archbishop Alonsus Faol was the head of the Church of Light and abbot of the Holy Order of Northshire Clerics prior to the First War between humans and orcs.

Biography

Prior to the First War, on his fourteenth birthday Medivh fell into coma and the Abbot and the King agreed that the future Guardian be taken into Northshire Abbey.<ref>Warcraft: Orcs & Humans manual, Chronicles of the War in Azeroth, 571</ref> During the course of the war, the Abbot received a vision about Sir Anduin Lothar being trapped in the Deadmines so King Llane sent the Defender of the Crown to rescue the missing knight.<ref>The Dead Mines (WC1 Human)</ref>

Following the terrible attrition suffered by his clerics in that conflict and the destruction of Northshire Abbey, the aged Faol fled with the surviving citizens of Stormwind to Lordaeron. Aided by his apprentice, Uther Lightbringer, Faol founded the Order of the Knights of the Silver Hand, this time equipping the followers of the Holy Light in the armaments of war.<ref>Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness manual, Alliance Ground Units, Paladin</ref> Alonsus Chapel, in Stratholme, was the site where he anointed Uther as the first of the paladins.<ref>Aurius#Quotes</ref>

Following the Second War, Archbishop Alonsus Faol worked ceaselessly to rebuild the Kingdom of Lordaeron and bring aid to the remaining nations of the Alliance of Lordaeron.<ref>Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Game Manual</ref> He helped to reform the Brotherhood of Northshire and raised vast funds to rebuild Stormwind City.<ref>Alonsus Faol#Death and remembrance</ref> He also took under his wing the kindly Benedictus and spent many years teaching him the ways of the Light, and together, they built the Cathedral of Light in Stormwind City.<ref name="WoW Manual">World of Warcraft: Game Manual, pg. 170</ref>

During the trial of Tirion Fordring in Stratholme, he held the position of one of the four jurors. Like the other judges, he was shocked when Tirion admitted his guilt, for taking a vow of honor to protect the orc Eitrigg and refusing to break it, which led the paladin to his excommunication and his exile.<ref>Of Blood and Honor, chapter 5</ref>

Death and remembrance

Alonsus Faol died at some point prior to the Third War and was succeeded as Archbishop by his apprentice Benedictus, who swore to continue the good work his mentor had begun so many years ago.<ref name="WoW Manual"/> He is presumed to have been buried at Faol's Rest, a graveyard in the now-plagued Tirisfal Glades, located near the Scarlet Monastery.

A statue and fountain stands in front of the Cathedral of Light in Stormwind City, honoring all the hard work done by Faol during the First and Second Wars, notably his raising funds to help rebuild the city and to reestablish the Brotherhood of Northshire.

Benevolent patron of the Church of Light.

Abbot of Northshire Valley during the First War, Archbishop Faol shepherded the flock during the dark days after the orcish incursion. It was with the Archbishop's guidance that the holy knights of the Silver Hand were formed, bringing the Light to the blasphemous invaders; and in the days after the Second War, he reformed the Brotherhood of Northshire and raised vast funds to rebuild Stormwind city itself.

This Cathedral stands not only as a bastion of the Holy Light, but as a lasting testament to one man's noble spirit and generosity.
