Alphear Mellowind

Alphear is one of "Dandelion Sister" - wandering healer and apothecary, as well as a trained priestess. Accompanied by her young apprentice, Mey, she has journeyed to many places, yet strangely, few can recall their presence.

Appearence

Alphear possesses a striking platinum hair, though in defiance of high elven tradition, she keeps it cropped short and practical. Once, she wore her hair long, but her years as a field medic instilled a preference for simplicity.

Her eyes gleam a vivid blue, reminiscent of the crystalline waters of a tropical shoal— yet faintly dimmed, lacking the radiant arcane shimmer typical of her kin. At times, Alphear lets her hair fall over one eye, whether the left or right, perhaps a subtle gesture of her detachment from the world around her.

She typically dons simple traveling robes, unadorned yet functional. Off duty, however, Alphear has amassed a diverse wardrobe, versatile enough to suit any occasion.

Around her neck, she always wears a Sun Cross, a sacred emblem of the Thalassian Church, fashioned from a cross of light with a radiant sun at its center.

Personality

Alphear is a "devout cynic", a paradox where pure divinity and utter blasphemy coexist within her.

Character-wise, Alphear runs contrary to the typical priestess. It's rare to find a priestess so reluctant to express love and reverence for the Light, and she hardly ever tries to preach or sermonize. Her faith in the Light is profoundly personal and internalized. For her, the notion "The Light is one with my soul" has been a basic fact of her existence since she was a child. This naturally faith is likely why she can still channel the Light's favor so effortlessly despite being such a maverick - or even heretic. And it has saved her soul from the edge of darkness countless times. Though the Light’s favor upon her is undeniable, Alphear remains markedly cynical and harbors a distaste for readily invoking its grace.

Silent as a cat, Alphear handles matters with cool professionalism, her emotions rarely surfacing. Yet, like a cat, she carries a streak of chaos—adhering only superficially to essential rules while dismissing those that inconvenience her, along with societal hierarchies or the opinions of others.

Healing the sick and saving lives stem more from instinct than compassion for Alphear, or rather, her empathy for the suffering is deeply internalized, akin to her ingrained beliefs, that it offers her little solace. Likewise, her patients find little comfort in her care—often feeling more like fish on a chopping block than individuals under a healer’s touch.

At its core, the profound contradiction in her character stems from the fact that becoming a priestess was never her chosen path. Yet, the Light’s qualities, absorbed through years of immersion since childhood, have become an indelible instinct etched into her soul.

Abilities and Skills

Alphear is proficient in all the skills and rituals expected of a priestess, wielding the power of the Light with effortless grace. Conversely, she possesses an acute sensitivity to the emotions and mental shifts of others. Her training with the Church has endowed her with formidable mental fortitude, enabling her to control this ability to the point of reading—and even influencing—the thoughts of some individuals. During her travels, she employs this gift to render herself unnoticed, cloaking her presence to conceal her movements.

Alphear excels in medicine and alchemy, with a particular mastery of battlefield first aid, ensuring her value is recognized wherever she goes.

Companion

Mey is a young high elf girl, appearing around eight years old, with features strikingly similar to Alphear’s, often mistaken for her sister or daughter, though Alphear insists she is her apprentice. Mey never speaks, leaving others uncertain whether she chooses silence or is unable to speak. Her mute, impassive demeanor carries an eerie quality, occasionally emanating an unsettling aura that sends shivers down the spine.

Mey is consistently clean and well-dressed, appearing meticulously cared for. She often assists Alphear by gathering herbs or serving as an aide during treatments. Mey is a genius at hide-and-seek, remarkably adept at concealing herself, yet she can always reappears at Alphear’s side when she needed, perhaps tied to some form of cloaking magic.

Backstory

Alphear's earliest memories trace back to the orphanage of the Thalassian Church. The priests proclaimed her existence a miracle, a divine gift bestowed by the Sun.

At that time, the young Alphear was discovered inside a barrel washed ashore on the coast of Quel'Thalas. The officials identified the emblem emblazoned upon it—a mark belonging to a merchant vessel that had departed from Sun Sail Anchorage. Yet, that very ship had met its doom near the Maelstrom a staggering one hundred and eighty years prior.

Given that Alphear's distinctive name was indeed exist on the historical passenger logs of Sun Sail Anchorage, this uncanny occurrence sparked a modest uproar at the time. Magisters from Falthrien Academy delved into her mystery, offering a plethora of theories. Some posited that the ship had sunk near a ley line nexus, and the crew’s spells for survival had triggered a temporal rift, resulting in this anomaly. Others attributed it to the benevolence of a bronze dragon. A few even whispered that Alphear might be an abyss horror cloaked in mortal flesh, though no definitive proof ever emerged. Ultimately, she was entrusted to the care of the Church, which preferred to see her as a miracle of Belore.

As she grew, Alphear proved an qualified altar apprentice, mastering rituals, scriptures, and elven traditions with ease. Her talents shone even brighter in the realms of medicine and alchemy. Yet her mentors unanimously agreed that while she might excel as a physician or apothecary, the mantle of a priestess would elude her. Despite a childhood steeped in the teachings of the Light, her cold demeanor remained unshaken—she possessed neither the fervor of a missionary nor the compassion of a monk.

However, this coldness is not without reason. To Alphear, it felt as though a void gnawed at the depths of her soul, consuming her emotions and passions. Few things could stir her to any visible reaction. This emptiness even seemed to draw in the feelings of those around her, like a gravitational pull. In her youth, she could occasionally sense the emotions of others nearby, their struggles echoing within her. But she was too young to shoulder such burdens, and the confessional became her most loathed hell. As darkness fell, her soul hovered between dreem and reality, an icy, shadowy presence lingered at the edges of her mind, watching, beckoning.

Yet fortune smiled upon her in the form of Mey, her dearest friend. Another orphan taken in by the Church, Mey’s presence silenced the discordant whispers that plagued Alphear. In her, Alphear found a refuge for her yearning for peace, fostering a profound emotional reliance.

As her mentors foresaw, Alphear mastered the medicinal and pharmaceutical knowledge church could to offer by the time she came of age, even earning the impressive of Silvermoon’s master alchemists. Still, the Church deemed her unprepared for priesthood, citing her lack of the qualities needed to guide the faithful spiritually. Though she could wield the Light through prayer, this was no human church—power alone did not suffice; the elves demanded more.

Though the title of priestess remained out of reach, Alphear was named one of the "Dandelion Sisters," a humble order of clergy dating back to the Kaldorei Empire. Tasked with wandering the land to deliver medical aid to those in need, she embarked on her journey as a traveling healer across Quel'Thalas, occasionally venturing into human territories. While adept at channeling the Light’s solace, she shunned over-reliance on it, reserving it as a final recourse. She viewed invoking its grace before exhausting mortal remedies as an act of hubris—a flaw she had heard too often in the hearts of her kin, one she knew would one day prove their undoing. Moreover, she harbored doubts that the Light would forever favor these lands. Thus, her travels centered on advancing conventional healing and pharmacology. Amid years spent among the downtrodden, she gradually tamed her hypersensitive spiritual resonance through meditation.

In the sixth year following the opening of the Dark Portal, Quel'Thalas summoned its priests and healers to defend the homeland. Alphear’s seasoned expertise and ruthless efficiency distinguished her among the field medics. Yet war spares no one. Beneath Silvermoon City, red dragons razed their encampment, and she watched helplessly as Mey perished in tthe flames.

Mey's death struck a devastating blow, but the aftermath brought an even stranger revelation: her name appeared neither on the roster of the fallen nor in any record—nor in anyone’s memory save Alphear’s own. It was as if Mey had never existed.

Refusing to accept this, Alphear clung to the reality of her loss, a choice that nearly broke her. The chasm between her inner and outer worlds widened, leaving her colder and more withdrawn than ever. The priests attributed it to war’s trauma, or perhaps an exacerbation of a mental rift that had haunted her since childhood.

The world, however, granted her little reprieve to mend. Her wartime prowess caught the eye of the intelligence division, who saw her ability to sense emotions as a spy’s invaluable asset. Though the Church disapproved, Alphear surprised them by accepting the offer. After rigorous training, she was dispatched to Dalaran, masquerading as a physician, apothecary, and envoy of the Thalassian Church.

Her acquiescence to this drastic shift was not without purpose—especially upon learning her destination was Dalaran. While managing her clinic, she tapped into Quel'Thalas’s intelligence network to gather resources for a clandestine endeavor. Unbeknownst to all, Alphear sought to harness her alchemical mastery to craft a homunculus—a forbidden artificial being birthed from her own flesh, an attempt to make Mey "truly exist."

Over nearly a decade in Dalaran, Alphear amassed an arsenal of illicit tools: black magic tomes pilfered from the Kirin Tor’s restricted archives, contraband from across the globe, deranged assistants as driven as she, and even covert funding from Archmage Kel'Thuzad—resources unthinkable in Quel'Thalas.

Crafting life proved a perilous, protracted ordeal. Though her intellect surmounted many obstacles, progress stalled in critical domains. It was not until the sixteenth year after the Dark Portal’s opening that Kel'Thuzad’s exile spurred the Kirin Tor to scour their realm for dark magic. Alphear was among the first exposed, arrested, and cast into the Violet Hold.

In prison, she leveraged her status as a Quel'Thalas spy to evade a grimmer fate, sealed in a stasis cell as a potential bargaining chip for future talks with her homeland. After years in suspended slumber, the twenty-second year brought a dramatic twist: her new king, Kael'thas Sunstrider, was imprisoned alongside her. Aided by the naga, the blood elves staged a daring jailbreak, freeing Alphear and leaving her no choice but to flee to Outland with Kael'thas’s forces.

In Outland’s brutal campaigns—from rescuing Illidan Stormrage to vanquishing Magtheridon—Alphear’s medical prowess proved invaluable, preserving countless lives. And, within the Black Temple, she unearthed knowledge far beyond Azeroth’s reach, unfathomable in its scope.

She resurfaced in her homeland in the twenty-fifth year after the Dark Portal’s opening, returning from Outland among Archmage Rommath’s retinue. Yet she soon vanished, her whereabouts eluding both native high elves and royalists alike. Now, fleeting glimpses of her emerge in Azeroth, though her presence fades from memory as swiftly as it appears. Those who encounter her note a quiet young girl at her side, eerily akin to Alphear herself, whom she introduces as her apprentice, Mey - an ordinary high elf yong girl, save for the chilling aura that cloaks her at certain times.
