King Llane Wrynn I was the ruler of the Kingdom of Azeroth during the First War. He was the child of King Barathen Wrynn and Lady Varia, and the father of King Varian Wrynn. He is also the grandfather of King Anduin Wrynn.

History

Llane was born in the year 564 by the accounting of years formerly used in that kingdom<ref name="WC:O&H">Warcraft: Orcs & Humans manual, Chronicles of the War in Azeroth</ref> and was a childhood friend of both Anduin Lothar and Medivh. The trio shared many adventures in the Azerothian wilderness in their youth such as when they were attacked by jungle trolls in Stranglethorn Vale.<ref>The Last Guardian, chapter 5</ref> In 577, Llane reached to the age of ascension, and was given the full title Prince of Azeroth. During the evening feast arranged to honor the young Prince, the great wizard Medivh, who had been absent from events of the world for years, interrupted, announcing his return to the world and giving an obsidian hourglass to Llane, symbolizing Azeroth's unending prosperity. The sands in the glass ran, but the top half never emptied into the lower half.<ref name="WC:O&H" />

Six years later, Llane awoke on an ordinary morning to find to his horror that the hourglass had almost completely emptied. As the last grain fell, an attack on Stormwind Keep by the orcs began. Although the first siege of the Stormwind Keep led by Kilrogg Deadeye and Cho'gall was repulsed, this marked the beginning of the First War that would last for years. Llane was sent with his mother to Northshire Abbey away from potential danger by his father, who in turn began to lead the battle against the orc.<ref name="WC:O&H" />

The next year, his father died, and at the age of twenty, Llane was pronounced King of Azeroth and continued the battle against the orcs for ten relatively successful years, during which the invaders were held back to the Swamp of Sorrows.<ref name="WC:O&H" />

Nearly ten years later, Llane was visited by a mysterious stranger who revealed herself to be Aegwynn, the mother of Medivh. She revealed that Medivh was behind the arrival of the orcs into the kingdom, warning that Azeroth would eventually have to deal with him.<ref name="WC:O&H" /> Despite this information, Llane refused to believe that his friend would willingly betray them, and that all his actions could be justified as part of a brilliant scheme. Llane felt confident in Medivh's allegiance, and that his army and Medivh's powers would be enough to beat back the Horde.<ref>The Last Guardian, pg. 273</ref>

Warchief Blackhand's second in command, Orgrim Doomhammer, set out to free the Horde from demonic corruption and ultimately assumed the role of warchief of the Horde by killing Gul'dan's corrupt puppet. Under his decisive leadership the relentless Horde finally laid siege to Stormwind Keep. King Llane had severely underestimated the might of the Horde, and he watched helplessly as his kingdom fell to the green-skinned invaders.<ref>The Dark Portal and the Fall of Stormwind</ref> Sensing that the final confrontation was at hand, Llane prepared to rally the armies of Azeroth against the orcs. As the orcs besieged Stormwind itself, the half-orc Garona, who had became a close friend and adviser to Llane but secretly remaining an agent of the Horde, assassinated the beloved king under orders from the orc Shadow Council and took his heart to the head of the Council, the warlock Gul'dan.<ref>The First War of Orcish Ascension</ref>
