The Stormreaver clan is a small but powerful orcish clan whose origins are fixed in the history of the Horde since its coming to Azeroth. As the last of his kind, the warlock Gul'dan maintained an iron-fisted rule over the clan. Gul'dan, who secretly ruled the Horde through his unwitting puppet Blackhand, had found that the shrewd Doomhammer harbored no trust or fondness for him. This forced Gul'dan to found the Stormreavers in order to protect himself from any action Orgrim might take against him. Gul'dan, along with the support of his clan, intended to find the lost Tomb of Sargeras; legend had it that this Tomb contained power beyond imagining.

During the course of the Second War, the Stormreavers held domain over Stormwind City and the island of Balor.<ref>Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness manual, Clans of the Horde, Stormreaver Clan</ref> The Stormreavers were also responsible for capturing giant sea turtles from the South Seas to be used as a submersible orcish craft after being pacified by potent spells of control.<ref>Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness manual, Naval Units of the Horde, Giant Turtle</ref> However, while the clan was assigned to defend the Horde's positions at Stormwind and Balor, they instead betrayed Doomhammer and hastened to the Broken Isles to raise the Tomb of Sargeras from the ocean floor. The Stormreavers' warriors were slaughtered by the Blackrock and Black Tooth Grin clans when Doomhammer exacted his revenge, and their spellcasters torn apart by the guardians of the Tomb.<ref>The Tomb of Sargeras (WC2 Orc)</ref><ref>Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Game Manual, Orcish History, Gul'dan and the Betrayal</ref> The orcs killed during the battle were eventually raised by the vile magics of the demons,<ref>The Tomb of Sargeras (WC2x Orc)</ref> and kept reliving it in their undeath.<ref>The Broken Isles (WC3 NightElf)</ref>

Those few Stormreaver warlocks and necrolytes who survived wander the world, their only company the ghosts of their fallen comrades. At some point, the Stormreavers returned to Balor, now led by Chieftain Stormsong and the Stormreavers' overlords of the Shadow Council, and reclaimed the abandoned halls of Stormwrought Castle once more for their own sinister purposes.
