Blackhand was the chieftain of the mighty Blackrock clan and the first Warchief of the Old Horde until he was killed by Orgrim Doomhammer near the end of the First War. He was known throughout Draenor and Azeroth alike as a brutal tyrant.

Biography

After the Horde's first catastrophic assault of Stormwind Keep by Kilrogg Deadeye of the Bleeding Hollow and Cho'gall of the Twilight's Hammer, Cho'gall and Kilrogg blamed each other's incompetence for the failure and the orcs quickly polarized into factions that supported either chieftain, threatening to tear the Horde apart. Gul'dan quickly stepped in to quell the problem, installing Blackhand, chieftain of the young Blackrock clan, as Warchief of the Horde to restore order to the Horde.<ref name="WC2 manual">Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness manual, The History of Orcish Ascension, The Mastery of Forces - Medivh and Blackhand</ref>

A raider in the Sythegore Arm, Blackhand was well honored by most orcs within the Horde. More importantly to Gul'dan, he was extremely lustful, and this made him easily corruptible. With help from the Shadow Council, Gul'dan set the eager Blackhand upon the horned throne of the Warchief. Blackhand was a ruthless dictator who inspired awe and terror from his warriors. While the Horde rallied under Blackhand and the other chieftains acquiesced control to him, it was Gul'dan who dictated policy by blackmailing and bribing Blackhand.<ref name="WC2 manual" /> Blackhand had studied the means with which the human armies of Azeroth were able to defeat overpowering numbers of Orcs through strategy and guile, and from these tactics he learned to bring organization to the scattered attacks of the Horde's raiding parties.<ref>Warcraft: Orcs & Humans manual, The Destiny of the Orcish Hordes</ref> It was under Blackhand's leadership that the Orcish Horde renewed its war of aggression against the kingdom of Stormwind.

During the war, his daughter Griselda disobeyed him and fled to the Deadmines with Turok and his band of ogres. Blackhand learned about this and sent a group of warriors to kill Griselda and her new friends.<ref>The Dead Mines (WC1 Orc)</ref>

When Gul'dan was rendered comatose with the death of Medivh while he was attempting to steal the location of the Tomb of Sargeras from him, Blackhand's second-in-command, Orgrim Doomhammer, betrayed Blackhand and deposed him as Warchief, seizing power in the Horde. Doomhammer would lead the Horde to victory over Stormwind, destroy the Shadow Council, and later lead the orcs to war once more against the remaining human nations of the Eastern Kingdoms in the Second War.<ref>Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness manual, The First War of Orcish Ascension</ref> Blackhand's sons, Rend and Maim, splintered from the Blackrock clan and formed the Black Tooth Grin clan to establish their own power base within the Horde.
