Lord Aldrin Ravenwood was a human knight and noble of the nascent kingdom of Gilneas, formerly a city-state of the Empire of Arathor. A close friend to Garalon Greymane, with whom he was raised as a teenager, he became the lord's bodyguard and later the general of the rebel army under Garalon's leadership during the war of Gilnean independence.

According to Gilnean legend, Aldrin was believed to be one of the unlucky children abandoned in the Ravenswood, as tribute paid to the myth known as the Wolf-Serpent. Against all odds and fate itself Aldrin managed to survive and was adopted by the Greymane nobility as the son of the cupbearer. However, Aldrin was unable to take over his adoptive father's task. His calling was to battle, a calling that convinced the young Greymane to employ him as his personal bodyguard. From there the two teenagers were to bond through intensive combat and strategy training as rivals, a rivalry that slowly turned into brotherhood.<ref name="Aldrin, Protector of the Realm">Aldrin, Protector of the Realm</ref>

On the day that Garalon started on the path to independence, he named Aldrin his knight and general of his armies. The rebel army emerged victorious against Arathor, seeing the death of Thoradin III, and his son and heir Prince Lenarol I sued for peace and bestowed upon them the lands of the Gilnean peninsula into Silverpine Forest.<ref name="TheSilverpineWars">The Silverpine Wars</ref> However, the nascent nation was soon invaded by the neighboring nation of Dalaran soon after. Gilneas emerged victorious against the Dalaranian incursion, though the nation came under threat once more when a rebellion erupted to remove King Garalon from power. As Garalon's favored general, Lord Aldrin Ravenwood had a prominent part in the subjugation of the rebellion.<ref name="TheFirstGreymane">The First Greymane</ref>

Aldin and Garalon's friendship grew over the years, and after Garalon gave birth to the kingdom of Gilneas, Aldrin was named Lord of Ravenshire and rightful leader of Ravenwood Keep. Strategically placed at the border of the lands and surrounded by the Great Sea, Aldrin would make sure that the highest and most respectable tradition would be that every Ravenwood was to be the shield of the realm until its very last man. And that the lawbreakers would have to face the fury and the loyalty of the raven that would rather cut its own wings than disrespect the word of the King.

After Garalon's death at the age of 43 by Alteraci assassins, a mere few years after he had supported their secession from Arathor,<ref name="TheFirstGreymane" /> Garalon's son was mentored and regented by Lord Ravenwood after Garalon's death, ensuring that the young prince would be prepared to take the throne upon coming of age. The lasting bond between House Greymane and House Ravenwood that originated from Aldin and Garalon's friendship has endured over the following generations, as so long as a Greymane has sat upon the throne of Gilneas, a Ravenwood has stood at their side.<ref name="Aldrin, Protector of the Realm" />
