The kingdom of Gilneas is one of the seven human nations in the Eastern Kingdoms, and is located in the peninsula of Gilneas, situated southwest of Silverpine Forest on the continent of Lordaeron. Originally an Arathorian city-state founded after the Troll Wars, it became an independent kingdom after splitting from the empire.

History

Early history

Gilneas was first founded as one of the city-states of the Empire of Arathor, and for long was a very militaristic supporter of the Empire along with the city-state of Alterac. Both Alterac and Gilneas' mighty armies explored the mountainous southern lands of Khaz Modan and made first contact with the dwarves.<ref>The Seven Kingdoms</ref>

According to Gilnean legend, the kingdom of Gilneas was founded by Garalon Greymane after winning its independence from the Empire of Arathor. Gilneas had become independent after Dalaran, but before nations such as Alterac and Kul Tiras, which remains a point of pride for Gilneans. Garalon, then a minor noble of Gilneas, led a rebellion against King Thoradin III of Arathor, seeing the Arathorian nobles who influenced the city-state as corrupt and oppressive. Rallying the other nobles of the state, Garalon declared himself the king of Gilneas, an act that Arathor could not tolerate. An army was sent to Gilneas to pacify it, leading to a war that saw Gilneas rise as an independent nation and led to the death of Thoradin III. During the war, Garalon made usage of dark magics to fight the Arathorian forces, which he channeled through his scepter with great effect in the battle of Stillward.<ref>{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}[[File:{{#switch:horde|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Combat|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Both|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}_{{#switch:small|xlarge=64|large=32|small=15|#default=32}}.png|{{#switch:horde|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Mob|hostile=Mob|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Alliance & Horde|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}|link={{#switch:horde|alliance=Alliance|boss=Mob|combat=Mob|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare mob|elite=Elite mob|kyrian=Kyrian Covenant|necrolord=Necrolord Covenant|night fae=Night Fae Covenant|venthyr=Venthyr Covenant|both|neutral|#default=Faction}}]] [46] The Ravenwood Scepter</ref> Though Thoradin's heir, Prince Lenarol I<ref name="TheSilverpineWars">The Silverpine Wars</ref>, sued for peace and bestowed upon them the lands of the Gilnean peninsula into Silverpine Forest, the budding nation of Gilneas was invaded by the neighboring nation of Dalaran soon after. Gilneas emerged victorious against the Dalaranian incursion, though the nation came under threat once more when a rebellion erupted to remove King Garalon from power. With the help of Garalon's favored general, Lord Aldrin Ravenwood, the rebellion was subdued.<ref name="TheFirstGreymane">The First Greymane</ref> After Gilneas had established its independence from Arathor, they established their capital within the city of Gilneas in the western peaks of the peninsula.<ref>Patch 1.17.0 - Gilneas City overview</ref>

Garalon later supported the secession of Kul Tiras and Alterac from Arathor, though Garalon was assassinated at the age of 43 by the very Alteraci nobles he had supported just years before.<ref name="TheFirstGreymane" /> Garalon's son was mentored and regented by Lord Ravenwood after Garalon's death, ensuring that the young prince would be prepared to take the throne upon coming of age.<ref>Aldrin, Protector of the Realm</ref>

During the rule of King Veren Greymane, Lordaeronian forces led by Prince Arterian Lordanol invaded the lands of Silverpine to claim it for Lordaeron, advancing with little resistance during the autumn before being halted by the harsh winters of the region. The Gilneans were far more accustomed to the climates, and so during the winter King Veran and his soldiers cut off Prince Arterain's supply lines and launched a surprise attack on Arterain's command camp, forcing the Lordaeronian army to retreat and taking the prince captive. During battle, witnesses claimed that King Veran called upon dark blood magics in battle, manipulating the blood essence of the fallen Lordaeronian soldiers. Prince Arterian was ransomed back to Lordaeron for a hefty sum, and Gilneas' victory over Lordaeron securing Gilnean rule over Silverpine for many years; though they later lost control over the region to Lordaeron under the rule of the Menethils.<ref name="TheSilverpineWars" />

In the aftermath of the disastrous War of the Three Hammers, the Wildhammer dwarves of Dun Kithas led by Sky King Redoran flew west from the Grim Reaches into Gilneas while in search of a new land to call home. Reaching the city of Gelnor, Redoran gifted many trinkets of his people to the Gilneans which they treasured, awed by the artisanship of dwarven-craft. Richest of Redoran's gifts was a bejeweled mithril crown he gifted to the ruling Greymane Queen, Elaena the Good. So charmed was Elaena that throughout her reign she never again unwearied her head. When Redoran and his people made ready to depart, they were halted by Queen Elaena who, for their generosity to the people of Gilneas, gifted them a place in Gelnor and to Redoran a seat at her court. The dwarves were glad to accept and Redoran ever shared Elaena's trust and council. To this day, dwarves and humans live there in Gelnor as one Gilnean kin.<ref>The Dwarves of Gelnor</ref>

Second War and aftermath

By the start of the Second War, Gilneas was one of the most powerful human nations, and because of this, the kingdom's ruler, Genn Greymane, was not a strong supporter of the Alliance, believing that his own armies would be more than enough to deal with any threat. Despite this, Gilneas was not neutral towards the Horde and did join the Alliance late in the Second War, and Gilnean soldiers led by Marshal Magnus Greystone engaged the Orcish Horde on the battlefield during the war;<ref>Marshal Magnus Greystone#Quotes</ref> although Lord Greymane constantly argued against its existence from beginning to end. Shortly after the Horde was defeated, Greymane pulled his nation's support from the Alliance, refusing to spend his nation's resources on keeping the orcs alive in internment camps or in rebuilding other nations devastated by the war.

After the betrayal of Aiden Perenolde, the ruler of Alterac, was revealed, Greymane had his eye on ruling the now-leaderless kingdom, even though he had no right to it. He supported the claim of Lord Perenolde's nephew, Isiden, to Alterac's throne. A base in Alterac would give Gilneas access to resources the southern kingdom did not have, and the excuse to send its mighty ships across the Great Sea. Greymane almost fought with Admiral Daelin Proudmoore over the issue, but the confrontation never came as both of them had reluctantly agreed not to bring back any weapons. They had even agreed to having themselves searched by selected sentries from the Knights of the Silver Hand, the only military unit they all trusted despite its outward allegiance to Terenas. Over time, due to mind control by the black dragon Deathwing, he grew to support Lord Daval Prestor (actually Deathwing in human form), in his bid for the throne.<ref name ="DotD">Day of the Dragon</ref>

During this time, Genn was visited by Mortimer and Celia Harlow, Alteraci nobles who had been sent by Lord Prestor. The siblings integrated themselves to his court, entering the ranks of courtiers and nobles that advised the king. However, the pair were actually black dragonspawn sent by their father to destabilize and destroy it from within.<ref name="Celia's Journal">Celia's Journal</ref> After Prestor vanished, Greymane continued to push Isiden's claim.

Third War and the Wall

The Greymane Wall after its construction.

Sometime after the Second War, Greymane constructed the Greymane Wall — an enormous stone barrier that now separates Gilneas from Lordaeron. Attempting to forever remove his nation from what he considered "other people's troubles", he barricaded Gilneas behind the wall. No one, not even other humans are allowed to enter Gilneas. Even during the Scourge's invasion of Lordaeron, while human refugees came begging to be allowed in, the Greymane Wall remained closed. Nevertheless, more refugees and other nations have entreated Gilneas for aid. These unfortunates never see a Gilnean and are easy prey for the worgen that occasionally stray south from Shadowfang Keep. Those on the other side in Gilneas have been spared from the Plague, though a part of the Greymane Wall now known as Oldrock Pass was briefly breached by a Scourge warhost led by the lich Naze the Eternal two years prior to the opening of the Greymane Wall, leading to the destruction of the town of Greyshire and the Scourge being decisively pushed out of Gilneas.<ref>{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}[[File:{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Combat|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Both|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}_{{#switch:small|xlarge=64|large=32|small=15|#default=32}}.png|{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Mob|hostile=Mob|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Alliance & Horde|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}|link={{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Mob|combat=Mob|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare mob|elite=Elite mob|kyrian=Kyrian Covenant|necrolord=Necrolord Covenant|night fae=Night Fae Covenant|venthyr=Venthyr Covenant|both|neutral|#default=Faction}}]] [42] Scouring Greyshire</ref> Although the land connection to Gilneas was closed, ships from this self-isolated nation have been spotted throughout the world, such as the pirate ship Heedless of captain Baron Longshore.

Just before the onset of the Third War, King Greymane was briefly visited by a mysterious prophet that flew over the Greymane Wall, pleading him to flee west to the lands of Kalimdor, but he refused, saying that flight was 'a craven's course' and that he would not tell his people to make refugees of their families. Yet as the months drew on, each of the stranger's prophecies turned to reality. First the return of the orcs, then the coming of the plague. When word that Stratholme had been put to the torch by Prince Arthas, Genn only tightened his resolve and fully sealed his gates to all outsiders.<ref name="Prophet">The Prophet's Warnings and the Gilneas Brigade</ref>

Many in his council protested at his edict, chief amongst them being Genn's son, Crown Prince Liam Greymane, who brought the news of Lady Jaina Proudmoore gathering the survivors of Lordaeron and sailing west to Kalimdor. He petitioned for his royal father to send a honor guard to escort the defenseless refugees. But the King refused, on account that any pestilence borne by the Lordaeronians risked spreading back to Gilneas. Against Genn's wishes, Liam sought support among the lords of Gilneas to send aid to the Human Expedition. Few shared his views, but of these, Lord Darius Ravenwood and Lord Gerold of Gelnor were the most influential. While Lord Ravenwood readied a fleet in secret, Gerold assembled a force of stout Gelnorian dwarves and men to volunteer as the promised honor guard. Thus the Gilneas Brigade, named by Prince Liam with full honors on the Gilnean shores, set sail for Kalimdor into the service of Lady Proudmoore. By the time that Genn discovered the plot, the Gilneas Brigade had already departed to join the expedition, though he harshly punished those involved in its formation, namely the Crown Prince and Lords Ravenwood and Gerold.<ref name="Prophet" />

In time, the Harlows used their influence over the king to poison his mind with thoughts of rebellion, leading him to turn against Lord Ravenwood and isolating him from his people and nobles; after the Harlows caused the death of Genn's wife Mia during a public event and led him to believe that Isiden Perenolde had caused the deaths of his son and daughter, he fell into despair and retired entirely from public view, leaving the Harlow siblings to rule Gilneas as Regent-Lords with Genn believed to be dead or incapacitated.<ref name="TheRebellion">{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}[[File:{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Combat|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Both|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}_{{#switch:small|xlarge=64|large=32|small=15|#default=32}}.png|{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Mob|hostile=Mob|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Alliance & Horde|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}|link={{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Mob|combat=Mob|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare mob|elite=Elite mob|kyrian=Kyrian Covenant|necrolord=Necrolord Covenant|night fae=Night Fae Covenant|venthyr=Venthyr Covenant|both|neutral|#default=Faction}}]] [40] The Rebellion</ref><ref name="Celia's Journal" />

Deep in despair at the believed loss of his entire family, the once-proud Genn was a broken man easily directed by the Regent-Lords. After the Harlows began to follow the teachings of the worgen pricolich Father Lycan, they corrupted his retinue and court through vampiric blood magic, turning them to depraved consumption of flesh and blood.<ref name="Celia's Journal" /> Under the Harlows' rule, a reign of tyranny ushered over Gilneas, and after being falsely accused of Mia's murder, Lord Darius Ravenwood rallied the support of the commonfolk and rose up against the oppressive regime, forming the Ravenwood Rebellion and beginning the Gilnean civil war.<ref name="TheRebellion" />

Eventually, the Greymane Wall was cracked open by members of the Ravenwood Rebellion, making the peninsula accessible once again to the outside world after over ten years. Seeking aid from the Alliance, Lord Ivar Pyrewood travelled to Stormwind City to petition the nobles of Azeroth to their cause and to seek aid in locating and freeing Isiden Perenolde.<ref>{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}[[File:{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Combat|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Both|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}_{{#switch:small|xlarge=64|large=32|small=15|#default=32}}.png|{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Mob|hostile=Mob|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Alliance & Horde|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}|link={{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Mob|combat=Mob|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare mob|elite=Elite mob|kyrian=Kyrian Covenant|necrolord=Necrolord Covenant|night fae=Night Fae Covenant|venthyr=Venthyr Covenant|both|neutral|#default=Faction}}]] [44] Legacy of Perenolde</ref> The Gilneas Brigade, once stationed as part of the budding city-state of Theramore, redeployed back home upon hearing of the troubles that haunted their homeland.<ref>{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}[[File:{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Combat|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Both|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}_{{#switch:small|xlarge=64|large=32|small=15|#default=32}}.png|{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Mob|hostile=Mob|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Alliance & Horde|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}|link={{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Mob|combat=Mob|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare mob|elite=Elite mob|kyrian=Kyrian Covenant|necrolord=Necrolord Covenant|night fae=Night Fae Covenant|venthyr=Venthyr Covenant|both|neutral|#default=Faction}}]] [38] The Brigade is Coming Home</ref> On orders of Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, Marshal Redpath of Southshore sent all able-bodied soldiers and adventurers to lend assistance to the Ravenwood Rebellion in their struggle for the liberation of Gilneas.<ref>{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}{{#ifeq:-|-||Template:Sort}}[[File:{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Combat|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Both|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}_{{#switch:small|xlarge=64|large=32|small=15|#default=32}}.png|{{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Boss|combat=Mob|hostile=Mob|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare|elite=Elite|both=Alliance & Horde|kyrian=Kyrian|necrolord=Necrolord|night fae=Night Fae|venthyr=Venthyr|neutral|#default=Neutral}}|link={{#switch:alliance|alliance=Alliance|boss=Mob|combat=Mob|hostile=Combat|horde=Horde|aldor=Aldor|scryers=Scryers|kirin tor=Kirin Tor|rare=Rare mob|elite=Elite mob|kyrian=Kyrian Covenant|necrolord=Necrolord Covenant|night fae=Night Fae Covenant|venthyr=Venthyr Covenant|both|neutral|#default=Faction}}]] [38] The Wall Comes Crashing Down</ref>
