Highlord Alexandros Mograine, also known as the Ashbringer, was the Scarlet Highlord and one of the original founders of the Scarlet Crusade along with High General Abbendis and Grand Inquisitor Isillien.

Background

Prior to the Third War, one of Mograine's sons joined the Alliance Expedition and ventured to Draenor.<ref name="Corrupted Ashbringer event">Corrupted Ashbringer/Scarlet Monastery Event</ref>

The Scarlet Highlord

Along with Abbendis and Isillien, Mograine formed the Scarlet Crusade and fought in the Third War. In its infancy, the Crusade was described by High Inquisitor Fairbanks as being a noble order, and the madness and insane zealotry that came to define it did not exist until the appearance of Grand Crusader Dathrohan, which set in motions the wheels of corruption. Mograine became known as the Ashbringer, a name additionally associated with his blade, due to his exploits against the undead armies of the Lich King. He would walk into whole battalions of undead and emerging unscathed - the ashes of his foes being the only indication that he had been there at all.<ref name="Corrupted Ashbringer event" /> The power of the Ashbringer came from the man who would wield it, and Commander Eligor Dawnbringer would later tell tales of the Highlord burning legions of undead in righteous fire before he would even unsheathe his blade.<ref name="Eligor Dawnbringer">Commander Eligor Dawnbringer#Quotes</ref>

The Highlord was the lynchpin of the Crusade. Feared by many of the Scourge, he met his end in tragedy. Through the betrayal of the Grand Crusader and Mograine's son Renault, a bargain was struck between Dathrohan and Kel'Thuzad. During a foray into the city of Stratholme, Mograine was ambushed by an army of thousands of undead, and though he stood his ground, Renault made to retreat and Fairbanks was soon buried beneath a pile of Scourge corpses when he fell as his powers were exhausted. However, Renault had remained off in the distance, remaining there despite Fairbanks' pleas to aid his father.<ref name="Corrupted Ashbringer event" />

Despite their overwhelming numbers, Mograine decimated the legions of undead Scourge, and then called out for Fairbanks. However, in his moment of vulnerability, Renault picked up Ashbringer and drove it through his father's heart as his back was turned. This act of betrayal profaned the blade. However, Renault did not realize that Fairbanks had survived the ambush. For two days Fairbanks remained under the rot and contagion of Scourge, gathering as much strength as possible to escape the razed city, and much to Renault's dismay he made his way back to the Scarlet Monastery. There he told the tale of the Highlord's death to any that would listen, though he would be murdered in cold blood for his actions and dragged to a hidden chamber within the cathedral. But those who heard his words would go on to form the Argent Dawn.<ref name="Corrupted Ashbringer event" /> Mograine would eventually be succeeded as Highlord by Taelan Fordring.

Naxxramas

In death, Mograine was raised and corrupted into one of the death knight champions of Kel'Thuzad, and continued to wield the Ashbringer that had been utterly corrupted by the profanity of Renault's betrayal. Though manipulated into attempting to retrieve the blade in his grief, Renault was unsuccessful.<ref name="Eligor Dawnbringer" /> Despite his controversial death, Mograine remained a martyr to the knights and warriors of Lordaeron, who would wear similarly fashioned suits in honor of their fallen hero.<ref name="Korfax">Korfax, Champion of the Light#Quotes</ref> As one of the Four Horsemen, he fought the heroes of the Argent Dawn when they entered Naxxramas.

The Corrupted Ashbringer was reclaimed from Naxxramas, and on the urging of Mograine's spirit within, it was brought to the Scarlet Monastery. Though Renault welcomed the bearer of the Corrupted Ashbringer and granted him or her command of his forces, Mograine's spirit manifested to confront his son. Renault begged his father for forgiveness and is quickly struck down by him, saying that he is forgiven.<ref name="Corrupted Ashbringer event" />

With Highlord Mograine and his son dead and his hatred said to be running too deep within the Ashbringer, the spirit of High Inquisitor Fairbanks pointed the wielder of the Ashbringer to the skies towards Outland, where Mograine's second son could be found and reforge the blade anew.<ref name="Corrupted Ashbringer event" />

Mograine's spirit could formerly be found at Uther's Tomb, having been added in an unknown update related to a now-cut questline involving the Ashbringer with a model that differed from his Scarlet Monastery Event appearance.
