They are a major adversary of the Forsaken and they maintain several bastions throughout the former lands of Lordaeron, namely the Scarlet Monastery, Hearthglen, Tyr's Hand and a large temple within Stratholme, wherein it is headquartered.

History

Founding and corruption

The Scarlet Crusade was formed by Highlord Alexandros Mograine, High General Abbendis and Grand Inquisitor Isillien during the Third War. Under Mograine's leadership, the Scarlet Crusade was at first a noble order, and Mograine was dubbed the Ashbringer as it would be all that remained of the undead after he would walk into whole battalions of undead and emerge unscathed. However, Mograine proved to be the lynchpin of the Crusade, and when joined by Saidan Dathrohan - who was in fact impersonated by the dreadlord Balnazzar - corruption began to spread throughout the Crusade, planting the seeds of madness and insane zealotry that the order became infamous for.<ref name="Corrupted Ashbringer event">Corrupted Ashbringer/Scarlet Monastery Event</ref>

Becoming Grand Crusader of the Scarlet Crusade, Dathrohan made a bargain with Kel'Thuzad and arranged for Alexandros to be ambushed during a foray in Stratholme. While the undead attack was not enough, it exhausted him enough that his son Renault was able to claim the Ashbringer and drive it through his father's heart while his back was turned. The heinous act of betrayal corrupted the blade and led to Mograine's own corruption as a death knight of the Scourge and champion of Kel'Thuzad.<ref name="Corrupted Ashbringer event" />

High Inquisitor Fairbanks, who had bore witness to the Highlord's death, returned to the Scarlet Monastery - much to Renault's dismay. Shouting and screaming, he told the tale of the lesser Mograine's betrayal to any and all who would hear him. While Fairbanks was murdered in cold blood for his actions and dragged to a hidden chamber of the Monastery Cathedral, some did listen to his words, and thus they separated from the Crusade to form the Argent Dawn.<ref name="Corrupted Ashbringer event" />

World of Warcraft

At first, the Scarlet Crusade counted members from citizens and races of all over the Alliance of Lordaeron, including high elves of Quel'Thalas, dwarves of the Alterac Mountains and human citizens of Stormwind, Alterac, Kul Tiras and Dalaran.<ref>Hall of Champions statues</ref> However, as the Scarlet Crusade continued to cling to their scattered holdings, obsessed with eradicating the undead and retaking their once-beautiful homeland,<ref>World of Warcraft Game Manual</ref> the Crusaders became intolerant of all non-human races, regardless of alliance or affiliation. They started believing that any and all outsiders were potential carriers of the undead plague - and must be destroyed.<ref>Game Guide/World Dungeons#The Scarlet Monastery</ref>

At some point after the formation of the Scarlet Crusade, the Scarlet Monastery was attacked by the Scourge at least twice in the Summertide Assaults.<ref>Ferren Marcus's statue inscription in the Scarlet Monastery</ref> The Crusade also attempted a strike against the Scourge base in Northrend, and built a fleet specifically for that purpose. The attempt failed, although the Crusaders reached as far as the mouth of Icecrown Glacier. There were many casualties among the high ranks of the Crusade, including its first Captain General, and first Chief Assassin. Its first and only Grand Admiral, Barean Westwind, was presumed deceased as well, but later resurfaced in the Scarlet Enclave.

Meanwhile, Tirion Fordring enlisted the aid of adventurers to redeem his son Taelan Fordring, who had risen through the ranks of the Scarlet Crusade and became their plan worked; Taelan was moved by the mementos and desires to reunite with his father so they can both become heroes of the Alliance and of Lordaeron. Taelan and the adventurer sneak out of Hearthglen to regroup with Tirion, but they were caught by Grand Inquisitor Isillien who murdered Taelan for his desertion on the Grand Crusader's orders. Tirion Fordring slew Isillien in retribution while the adventurer dispatched Isillien's Crimson Elites. In Stratholme, the undead Scourge — led by the powerful lich, Kel'Thuzad, was locked in battle with a contingent of Scarlet Crusaders, led by Grand Crusader Dathrohan. Both forces held portions of the ravaged city, and both sides were locked in constant, violent combat.<ref>Game Guide/World Dungeons#Stratholme</ref> The Argent Dawn has been sending adventurers into Stratholme to contend with both factions.
