Gilneas City is an instance dungeon located in Gilneas. Located at the heart of this once-isolated land, Gilneas City was once a bastion of hope for its people. Established after breaking free from the rule of the Arathorian lords, it stood as a symbol of resilience and prosperity. However, it is now a mere shell of its former beauty, with a dark presence casting a gripping shadow over Gilneas and serving as a reminder of its once glorious past. Distant howls echo through the city, haunting reminders of its new occupants. Yet, there is a possibility that not everyone is gone and that their accursed king may still live.

Background

The city of Gilneas is the capital of the human kingdom of the same name, ruled for centuries by House Greymane. It is located to the west on the top of a mountain.

During the Second War, King Genn Greymane was one of the founders of the Alliance of Lordaeron along with the rulers of the other human nations, the dwarves of Khaz Modan and the elves of Quel'Thalas, fighting side by side against the Orcish Horde until they finally won the war.

Following the end of the war, Genn strongly opposed maintaining the internment camps where the Orcs were held, so he separated from the Alliance along with his kingdom and built a wall to separate the peninsula where the kingdom of Gilneas was located from the rest of the continent of Lordaeron, isolating its people from the outside world for several years.

Beyond the Greymane Wall

Many years after the end of the Second War and the erection of the Greymane Wall, Gilneas was made accessible once again to the outside world when members of the Ravenwood Rebellion opened its gates to find aid for the Gilnean civil war. However, no one expected to find such a desolate environment behind the Great Wall of Greymane.

Death, pain, suffering and destruction - Greymane's wall hid a tyranny enforced by loyalists of Genn Greymane since the Second War; in truth being directed by the Regent-Lords of Gilneas, Mortimer and Celia Harlow. This attitude worsened after the worgen entered the nation through Oldrock Pass, further ravaging its people, and the manipulation of the House of Nobles of the kingdom. King Genn is believed by Lord Darius Ravenwood to have been slain by the Harlows, as he would not have stood for the tyranny that now plagues his nation.

Worgen of the Duskpelt pack led by Packmaster Ragetooth invaded the city at the height of the civil war, ravaging the desolate streets while Greymane's loyalists attempt to keep the districts on lockdown to protect their king and prevent any rebels from reaching Greymane Tower.
