The draenei are a race native to the world of Draenor. For nearly five thousand years, the draenei toiled their fields on their red world until they came into conflict with the Orcish Horde. The resulting conflict left their people destroyed as the orcs moved on to invade the world of Azeroth.

History

Rise of the Horde

The draenei once co-existed peacefully with the orcs on the lush world of Draenor for thousands of years. While the noble orc clans roamed the open prairies and hunted for sport, the inquisitive draenei built crude cities within the world's towering cliffs and peaks. The peace was shattered when the world was discovered by the demon Kil'jaeden, who saw that the warrior orcs were more susceptible to the Legion's corruption and enthralled the elder orc shaman, Ner'zhul. Using the cunning shaman as his conduit, the demon spread battle lust and savagery throughout the orc clans. Before long, the spiritual race was transformed into a bloodthirsty people.<ref name="Shadow Pact">Kil'jaeden and the Shadow Pact</ref>

While Ner'zhul was unwilling to take the last step and give themselves over entirely to the pursuit of death and war, Kil'jaeden found the willing disciple he sought in Ner'zhul's ambitious apprentice, Gul'dan. Promising Gul'dan untold power in exchange for his utter obedience, he taught him demonic magics and helped him found the Shadow Council, a secretive sect that manipulated the clans and spread the use of warlock magics throughout Draenor. As more and more orcs began to wield warlock magics, the gentle fields and streams of Draenor began to blacken and fade. Over time, the vast prairies the orcs and draenei had called home for generations withered away, leaving only red barren soil as the demon energies were slowly killing the world.<ref name="Shadow Pact" />

The orcs became increasingly aggressive under the secret control of Gul'dan and his Shadow Council, and over the course of a few months, the Horde eradicated nearly every draenei living on Draenor. Only a scattered handful of survivors managed to evade the orcs' awesome wrath.<ref>Rise of the Horde</ref>

Third War

This section concerns content related to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos or its expansion The Frozen Throne.

Several groups of draenei managed to survive the destruction of Draenor. One of these tribes, led by Elder Sage Akama, were hunted down to the brink of extinction by the armies of Magtheridon, the Burning Legion overlord in Outland. Illidan Stormrage promised to rid the draenei of their ancient enemies in exchange for their loyalty.

The Tribe of Sanv, at the time led by Sanv Tas'dal, fled from Outland to Azeroth after their world was ravaged by the orcs. However, Sanv Tas'dal had remained behind on Draenor, ordering Sanv K'la and Akh Z'ador to escape the dying world with their brethren. World of Warcraft

This section concerns content related to the original World of Warcraft.

The draenei exiles of the Tribe of Sanv who had founded the Harborage within the Swamp of Sorrows were now in open conflict with the other tribe of the Fallow Sanctuary, which had now become known as the Lost Ones. Driven mad by the rigors of their journey to Azeroth, Noboru and his gang had become a terror to the draenei of the Harborage, wandering the swamps and killing any who crossed their path.

Other draenei like Kum'isha the Collector and his refugees had decided to stay in the Blasted Lands instead. Many of the draenei were homesick and were in search of a rift that could bring them back on what remained of Draenor. The precious draenethyst shards were rumored to be able to open a rift, a feat that Kum'isha eventually managed with the help of adventurers when brought a Flawless Draenethyst Sphere.

Sanv Tas'dal was later discovered to have become a servant of the Burning Legion along with the remainder of his tribe when Akh Z'ador attempted to riftwalk back to Draenor in search of his tribe. Culture

The draenei are practitioners of an ancient magical rite known as riftwalking, which allows its adherents to tear open gateways in the Twisting Nether.<ref name="Learn Of My Past" />

The tribe of Lost Ones in the Swamp of Sorrows are known to use shamanism and dark magic.

Draenethyst, a gem native to Draenor, is seen as sacred by the draenei and holds great value to them for sentimental and magical properties. Some draenei are known to take their reverence for the draenethyst too far and are driven to steal it from their brethren, such as the Lost Ones of the Swamp of Sorrows did to their brethren of the Harborage.<ref>THE MIREBEAST — Everlook Broadcasting Co. Radio Play Series</ref> In addition to being a key reagent for less experienced riftwalkers, it is used as decorations on some of their larger leather huts.
