The Shattered Hand clan is an orcish clan named as such for the practice of self-mutilation that every grunt in the clan performs.

History

The Shattered Hand had stayed in Draenor when the orcs first crossed the Dark Portal and were spared the defeat that ended the Second War. Under Kargath, the Shattered Hand and the Thunderlord clan lent their forces to Dentarg to reclaim the Skull of Gul'dan from a captain of the Bonechewer clan.<ref>The Skull of Gul'dan (WC2 Orc)</ref> Kargath later led a force of Shattered Hand orcs into Azeroth.<ref>Beyond the Dark Portal (WC2 Human)</ref> Kargath's Shattered Hand army defended the Azerothian side of the Dark Portal during the last days of the Invasion of Draenor, and they were left stranded with their chieftain after Ner'zhul abandoned them and the Portal was destroyed by the Alliance.<ref>The Dark Portal (WC2 Orc)</ref>

The Shattered Hand's status during the interim period between the destruction of the Dark Portal and the fall of the internment camps is unknown; of Kargath's contemporaries, Kilrogg of the Bleeding Hollow was captured along with his clan, while Grom Hellscream of the Warsong clan continued to evade the Alliance.<ref>Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Game Manual, Orcish History, Day of the Dragon</ref> Supported by many of the veteran chieftains, Thrall ultimately succeeded in revitalizing the Horde and giving his people a new spiritual identity.<ref name="ThrallsTale">Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Game Manual, Orcish History, Thrall's Tale</ref>

The Shattered Hand still exists, making their home in the Cleft of Shadow, located in the orcish capital of Orgrimmar. The Shattered Hand makes a living as the Rogues Guild of Orgrimmar, now accepting various other races into their ranks, including jungle trolls and goblins. The Shattered Hand was able to place spies throughout the upper citadel of Blackrock Mountain. Though the information gathering process was slow, they managed to discover that the influence of the black dragonflight had extended beyond the Burning Steppes and into the kingdom of Stormwind itself after Onyxia infiltrated the Stormwind court.

Notes

• Both the Warcraft III Game Manual and the in-game The New Horde book mention that "many of the veteran chieftains" supported Thrall. The only chieftains who fit this description are Kilrogg of the Bleeding Hollow clan and Kargath of the Shattered Hand clan.<ref name="ThrallsTale" /> The other clan chieftains such as Zuluhed the Whacked and Mogor were either in clans that opposed the Horde at the time or were on Draenor.
